The modern lathe, a machine tool developed during the last 200 years that turns a metal piece held against a cutting tool to remove metal and bring the work into different sizes and forms like threads, has practically given shape to our present industrial civilization by manufacturing varieties of machine components and products to great accuracies. Turner Craftsman learns all related lathe operations including various types of thread cutting. An 8-week module on CNC machining has also been introduced in the latest syllabus.

TURNER TRADE is a Hi-Tech Trade being conducted at our ITI  and includes advanced automation training in Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Lathe with the latest Fanuc 0i-TF controller. AutoCAD is also taught as part of the course. After three semesters of gaining thorough expertise on manual lathe machines, the trainee is now well-placed to take the big leap in the fourth semester and is given sufficient on-hand experience in CNC lathe. This is very useful for building confidence in working in modern industries with CNC automation

The work of the Turner craftsman, which is under the machinist family of trades, may include:

A) Manufacture of small quantities of custom made components that may be part of a larger machine tool, or piece of custom built plant or equipment.

B) Manufacture of large quantities of identical components for inclusion in mass-produced consumer items such as motor cars, trucks, plant and equipment.

C) Modification or manufacture of replacement parts for existing machine tools, plant or equipment that have become worn or damaged while in service.

Typical work is in the manufacturing, mining, automotive, marine and aeronautical industries. Machining of cast, forged or fabricated components is common place because only machining can produce the accuracy of size, shape and surface finish that are necessary for operation and interchangeability between precision running components.

Trade Test and Certification:

A) All-India Trade Tests are conducted by the Directorate General of Training (DGT), Ministry of Skill Development And Entrepreneurship under the aegis of the National Council for Vocational Training in July and January every year for various examinations.

B) National Trade Certificates are awarded to the successful candidates.

C) National Trade certificate is a recognized qualification for recruitment to relevant posts and services in Central/State Government establishments.

Employment

A)Lucrative job opportunities for Turners are now focused on CNC lathes. Turner ITI candidates have numerous job opportunities for recruitment in Central and State Government and  public sector companies.  Manufacturing industries in and around Kolkata and West Bengal, and many other states of India like Orissa, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, etc. .  Even manual lathe operator is always a requirement in  many  industries.

B)Our trainees were placed in Ordnance Factory, Indian Railways, DRDO, Ashok Leyland (UAE), Westinghouse Saxby Farmer, KSE, Utkarsh Pipes & Tubes, ITC Foods, Royal Enfield (Chennai), Premier Transmission (Falta), Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Hindustan Glass, New Allenberry Works, Kiswok Industries, Vikrant Forge, Lagan Industries etc.

Higher Studies

Some students opt to go for Diploma in Mechanical Engineering studies through JEXPO or VOCLET.

A diploma engineer will be able to graduate to  CNC Programming, CAD/CAM etc. in advanced automation .
